LA PRIMA VOLTA DI PORSCHE Motore "1100" derivato dalla Volkswagen, 45 CV: alla 24 Ore di Le Mans. Vinse la sua classe a 120 km / h di media. Ferdinand Porsche accetta la sfida, l'invito del giornalista Charles Faroux a correre la 24 Ore di Le Mans. Lo fa schierando una "356" poco potente, ma aerodinamica, tutta speciale: ha solo 45 cavalli, un motore di 1089 cm3 e, con una velocità di punta di 160 all'ora, pare poco più di un'evoluzione del "Maggiolino" Volkswagen. Ma può funzionare. Porsche appronta in tutta fretta cinque vetture con carrozzeria in alluminio, carena le ruote, accentua la linea aerodinamica e inizia a provare. Il telaio è tubolare, sospensioni, sterzo e cambio sono di serie. Punta tutte le sue carte sull'affidabilità, sulla resistenza del motore: Le Mans, in fondo, è una prova di endurance. Una prova estenuante: basta un minimo errore, anche per stanchezza, e si dice addio a ogni cosa. Un esempio? Cinque chilometri di rettilineo alle Hunaudières terminano in una curva secca, si arriva velocissimi e i freni, a quel punto, non bastano mai. Non è una gara come le altre, la 24 Ore. Porsche ripete ai suoi che è due volte la Mille Miglia, in tutti i sensi. Ai box il severo regolamento vieta il benché minimo aiuto o rifornimento che non sia di acqua, olio e carburante. Ma anche questi liquidi devono essere somministrati sobriamente, ogni 337 chilometri e mezzo. Cioè ogni 25 giri. Ferdinand muore all'improvviso e il figlio Butzi prende il suo posto in azienda. In prova, quattro delle cinque vetture si fermano col motore in briciole. Ne resta solo una, affidata a Auguste Veuillet e Edmond Mouche, e al battesimo in pista, su Le Mans piove a dirotto, la visibilità è scarsa. La tenuta di strada della "356" è, per dirla con un eufemismo, precaria, eppure, giro dopo giro, quella Porsche riscuote consensi e applausi, vincendo alla fine nella sua classe. In 24 ore la piccola "356" percorre oltre 2840 chilometri, un oltre 123 di media, battendo il record che apparteneva a Gordini su Simca "8". In classifica, è ventesima assoluta, mentre la vittoria è della Jaguar "XK 120 C" di Walker-Whitehead. UN LAMPO FRA LE NUVOLE La "356" passa a tutto gas sul rettilineo davanti alle tribune, alla velocità massima: 160 km / h. Quel giorno del 1951, a Le Mans, nonostante la pioggia, 130.000 spettatori applaudono la gara della piccola sportiva tedesca.
